Images of Industry Illustrations

For me working in the Classical Music Industry is like…

The Images of Industry project talks bout how different people feel when working in the classical music industry. It talks about their struggles and frustrations. Each illustration represents a students different struggle and how they feel.

I completed a total of 28 illustrations for this project that will be used to showcase the project as a whole. These images were used in presentations, on the website and throughout different social media platforms.

When designing the website layout I took on the University of York’s brand guide and made sure everything felt cohesive.

The Illustrations

To get the project started on the right foot I grabbed a sketchbook and sketched out ideas for each individual illustration. These sketches were then sent to the client for the first round of approvals before opening Illustrator. Once approved we hopped over to Adobe Illustrator for the vector line work. I wanted the illustrations to all feel like part of the same collection so I’ve used the same bottom lines and artstyle throughout.

The bold, colourful designs sit in stark contrast to the message behind each illustration and the project as a whole.

“Christine did a fantastic job for me on a recent project for my University. This included graphic design, illustration and a website build. Christine was communicative, did the work quickly to a high standard and was excellent value for money. She was quick to take on board our feedback and changes, and to enact them swiftly. Highly recommend!”

The Process

When working on a large illustration project like this one it is always best to plan everything before diving into the illustrations themselves. I sketched out each idea for the illustrations before sending to the client for an initial approval and to make sure we were both on the same page. As you can see below the process included a sketch, line art and then the final colourised vector illustration.

I’ve always enjoyed creating bright, bold, block colour illustrations. It is certainly my favourite artstyle and it is one I use across many projects.

The Website

This project also required a website design and build using WordPress. I created a nice, clean layout design to make sure the illustrations and content were the main attraction. The website is to be used as a central hub for everything to do with the universities music courses and this project.

My website design process always starts out in Figma with wireframes and flat designs. Making sure we layout all important sections and content. Then we move over to WordPress and the Divi theme to build out the functional website, making sure to maintain the projects branding and design.

Project Summary

This is the largest illustration project I’ve worked on as a freelance designer. The project also required a very quick turnaround which I was happy to accommodate for. Each illustration was hand drawn and crafted by myself and multiple file types were provided to the client on project completion to make sure they had everything they needed moving forward.

Since project completion I’ve been told that the images were greatly received and everyone loved seeing them during multiple conferences and talks.
